Vata Pournima: Yes - No - May be??

Vata Pournima is Maharashtrian Karvachauth. Women observe a fast and tie threads around a banyan tree and pray for the same husband in every birth.  During this puja women pray for good health of their husbands.

My super excited mom now has two girls (Me and my SIL who recently got married) lined up for their FIRST Vata Pournima! Unfortunately, my SIL is a good gharelu girl and so I look more like a spoilt brat. I am in two states whether to do the fast or not. I dont mind keeping a fast for the guy (He is being too sweet to me these days! ;) ) but then my mom says you do it once you have to do it every year. Moreover, this year it falls on June 23, 2013 i.e. coming Sunday which is my parents 30th Wedding anniversary. So I was more in a party mood rather than a fasting mood.

What is your take on Vata Pournima? Do you feel necessary to starve yourself for your love? or You think what's the harm in having a one day fast every year? or You fast just because it is mandatory for every married girl to fast?

I dont belive in fast or starving just to follow any tradition. I dont think any god will be happy to see his child hungry. Feelings and commitment matter more to me.

    1. It depends upon person to person. I think one should follow traditions only if they really believe in what they are doing. Not just because they are told to do so. There is nothing right or wrong. I couldn't fast as I was unwell and had to take medications!

  2. We had Vat Savitri on June 8. I did it because it made my MIL really happy and my husband was really sweet and did the fast with me. I would have preferred if he didnt keep the fast with me, cos it usually ends up with me taking care of him and not the visa versa :P I have never seen my mom keeping any fasts, so it was a little unusual for me. Still, I really didn't mind it too much - once a year I guess is ok.

    1. I know! I would love to get that attention. My mom is a pro in fasting. But thanks to my grandma, the culture in our house is such that each one gets to decide what they want to follow. My MIL and me suffer from bad acidity problems so she said its ok if I dont fast. Still, like you even I felt I would manage as its just one day in a year.
