A brides' must visit: Mangaldas Market and around!

I have got numerous queries for lace and cloth market in Mumbai. I always knew that you get all kinds of lace & latkans in Bhuleshwar. Although, I always tried to avoid its narrow by lanes. But like a good bridal blogger, I decided to be the guinea pig and get as much information for the readers.

So, I have had frequent visits to the Mangaldas Market in the last few weeks months, only to realise what a huge mistake I did by not going there during my wedding. Oh! it has this high-on-spirits aura which will take your wedding shopping excitement to another level. You get EVERYTHING you need for your wedding there. What I like about the place is that it offers products for all budgets : you need pure Italian crepe - you will get it and if you want artificial velvet, you will get that too. Don't be surprised to see young to be brides sweating out in the Mumbai heat with their mothers trying to bargain in their tuti-puthi Hindi.
What you should look for:
1.       Cloth material
2.       Latkans
3.       Laces
4.       Decoration items

What I did: Every shop I went to, I bought whatever I like without comparing the prices as you tend to get lost owing to the variety one got to chose from. During my first visit, I tried to compare the prices, but it is difficult to remember so many prices and quality (unless you write it down).
Quick tip: The lace market near Zaveri bazaar is more expensive than the lace market in Bhuleshwar. Although, Zaveri bazaar is a lot hassle free and you will not have to walk too much as it is almost adjoining the Mangaldas cloth market.
So wear your sport shoes, eat a heavy parantha at Bhagat Tarachand and burn away your calories running from one shop to another. This is a snapshot from google maps which I made to help you find the even cheaper lace galli. I may not be able to direct you to the exact stores I visited but the people there are so helpful that I am sure you will find your way.
Marathi Weddings tip:
Buy artificial raw silk material in bright colours for as less as 80 Rs per mtr and get your cushion covers stitched for a mehendi decor in any colour you want.
Say no to the OTT readymade thalis available in market. Make your pooja thalis at home. There are so many little things available that all you have to do is glue it all together to have a unique wedding items.
Things to Remember:
Visit there once, just to judge the availability. Try not to buy anything even if you are too tempted. For the next time, plan before you step out of the house. It is so difficult to stick to that plan as every time you see something better, you divert from your base. But having no plan will leave you even more confused. Believe me, my second visit to the market was much more fruitful than the first.

  1. Hi,
Heard about Mangaldas market a lot manier times before I read your blog, though after reading your review on it, I accidentally slipped into a lane which led me again to Managaldas market. (There are many ways or lanes-to be precise that can take you accidentally to Mangaldas). My trip was amazing as I could see amazing embroidered dupattas, velvet dupattas, neon fabrics on the go. One thing that disappointed me were the prices. They were too much for a Mumbai girl to bargain, though I wasn't sure about bargaining here.

My question to Aditi is- can we bargain here? or are the prices of the wholesale value?

One velvet, neatly bordered, 2.25mtrs dupatta here costed Rs1450. Which I think should be of lower prices.

What is your take on his Aditi?

    1. Hi Nirmiti,
In Mangaldas, I have seldom found over priced stores (as compared to fabric stores in my locality). Was the dupatta made up of pure velvet? If yes, then pure velvet fabric + dyeing charges + border + tailoring charges will not cost less than 1400 INR.
I try to bargain at any store I go to. You can bargain at some stores in Mangaldas but some are strictly fixed priced store. This is no-brainer but usually if you buy in bulk, they tend to give in.
Let us know when you go there again. :)

  2. Hi Aditi..
Can you please suggest if there is any shop in Mangaldas Market that sells unstitched/semi-stitched lehenga material. I want to get a lehenga made for myself for wearing at a cousin's wedding. But I am not willing to spend more than 5k on the lehenga.. I am sure you know being a Maharashtrian, I am not looking at something OTT, but at the same time it should be something that really stands out :)
